Summary

In the heart of Egypt,
Under the watchful eye of the Gods,
A new power is rising 。 。 。

In the city of Lahun, Hui lives an enchanted life。 The favoured son of a doting father, and ruler-in-waiting of the great city, his fate is set。 But behind the beautiful façades a sinister evil is plotting。 Craving power and embittered by jealousy, Hui's stepmother, the great sorceress Ipsetnofret, and Hui's own brother Qen, orchestrate the downfall of Hui's father, condemning Hui and seizing power in the city。

Cast out and alone, Hui finds himself a captive of a skilled and powerful army of outlaws, the Hyksos。 Determined to seek vengeance for the death of his father and rescue his sister, Ipwet, Hui swears his allegiance to these enemies of Egypt。 Through them he learns the art of war, learning how to fight and becoming an envied charioteer。

But soon Hui finds himself in an even greater battle - one for the very heart of Egypt itself。 As the pieces fall into place and the Gods themselves join the fray, Hui finds himself fighting alongside the Egyptian General Tanus and renowned Mage, Taita。 Now Hui must choose his path - will he be a hero in the old world, or a master in a new kingdom?

First off the cover is amazing and definitely eye catching。 I like how each chapter flows into each other。 I also like how you can tell you're on a new chapter。 Each is started by a small box of Egyptian pictures。 The way the author tells the story definitely paints the picture into your head。 Lots of details but not too much either。 It definitely has lots of thrills。 It has tons of action。 Some suspense。 It also has a bit of fantasy to it。 This story and the way the author writes will definitel First off the cover is amazing and definitely eye catching。 I like how each chapter flows into each other。 I also like how you can tell you're on a new chapter。 Each is started by a small box of Egyptian pictures。 The way the author tells the story definitely paints the picture into your head。 Lots of details but not too much either。 It definitely has lots of thrills。 It has tons of action。 Some suspense。 It also has a bit of fantasy to it。 This story and the way the author writes will definitely keep you interested, wanting more and on the edge of your seat。 I like how the author puts a map into the beginning of the book as well。 It gives you a look into where everything is。 I also like how the story starts。 You're already questioning what's happening and what will happen。 It definitely makes you want to find out what happens in the end。 I cannot wait to see if these characters will have even more adventures later on。 。。。more

Not my type of book。 I really, really wanted to love this book。 I like learning about history/ the past and i don't know much about ancient Egypt, so i was very excited to start reading。The beginning was pretty confusing because the author gave very little context on what was happening。 It got better as the story continued though, i will say that。I found some portions to be very interesting。 I really enjoyed several scenes and i liked some of the characters, but that wasn't enough for me to love Not my type of book。 I really, really wanted to love this book。 I like learning about history/ the past and i don't know much about ancient Egypt, so i was very excited to start reading。The beginning was pretty confusing because the author gave very little context on what was happening。 It got better as the story continued though, i will say that。I found some portions to be very interesting。 I really enjoyed several scenes and i liked some of the characters, but that wasn't enough for me to love this book。 i kept hoping I'd start to love the story, but i really didn't。 To be honest i found many parts to be quite dull。Something that i really didn't like was the author's writing style。 In my opinion, it made the story very boring at some parts and just dragged the story down。Overall, not a terrible book, just not for me。Thanks to bookish first for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I love Egyptian culture, so being drenched in it as I read about Hui's story was pure bliss。 Smith is so talented in his sweeping prose, and I felt Hui's pain so strongly as the life he loves is ripped from him。 His father is murdered by his stepmother and he's taken as a captive。 This book jumps into the action very quickly, but the story and the background were built up with near-perfect timing beforehand。 There was never a time where I was bored, and the pacing kept the balance so I was never I love Egyptian culture, so being drenched in it as I read about Hui's story was pure bliss。 Smith is so talented in his sweeping prose, and I felt Hui's pain so strongly as the life he loves is ripped from him。 His father is murdered by his stepmother and he's taken as a captive。 This book jumps into the action very quickly, but the story and the background were built up with near-perfect timing beforehand。 There was never a time where I was bored, and the pacing kept the balance so I was never confused as to what was going on。 I love stories that dive right into action like that and The New Kingdom definitely kept up the pace。 The dilemma Hui faces about his past versus his future had me on the edge of my seat。 Paired with the historical figures and rich Egyptian culture throughout, I was never bored and had a hard time setting this book down。 A great read and I really enjoyed going through Hui's journey with him! 。。。more

DNF at 19%I really wanted to love this one, but I was wary of it from the beginning。 It was a deviation from the genres I typically read, which may have been why this failed so badly。 I wasn't invested in it at all, and I found myself reading just to read, not because I was actually enjoying the content。 I think my main problem with this has to be the choppiness。 There was no flow in between events, stuff just happened。 From the very first page, stuff is happening with very little explanation。 I DNF at 19%I really wanted to love this one, but I was wary of it from the beginning。 It was a deviation from the genres I typically read, which may have been why this failed so badly。 I wasn't invested in it at all, and I found myself reading just to read, not because I was actually enjoying the content。 I think my main problem with this has to be the choppiness。 There was no flow in between events, stuff just happened。 From the very first page, stuff is happening with very little explanation。 I never connected with the plot, and I barely understood what was even happening。 This is a minor spoiler, but considering it was part of the reason I gave up on this, I feel like it has to be mentioned。 Around 50 pages in, there's already a detailed incestuous coupling。 I didn't care what part this had to play with the rest of the story, it wasn't something I was interested in reading more of。 This was my first book in this series, and considering I couldn't even get through it, I don't think I'll be picking up the rest。 Thanks to BookishFirst for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

Ancient Egypt Comes to Vivid, Exciting LifeI was so happy to read about Taita again! The research has obviously been done。 So many details of the time are described with rich depth。 I love Egyptology; but some how Wilbur Smith’s Egypt series doesn’t capture me。 I have read a few books in the series and kept on up to 20% of this book。 Something in the style and character development doesn’t ring my bell。I love his Courtney series of Africa and feel that Wilbur Smith is a great writer。 This one just wasn’t for me。

Another brilliant book on ancient Egypt。 I thoroughly enjoyed his first series and hope this one continues on for many more books。 This is a period of history that fascinates me and who but Wilbur Smith can bring it to life。

I love ancient Egyptian mythology and when I saw what this book was about I was instantly interested in it and in seeing what happens in the story。 I absolutely loved the way that in this book there is so much happening but it still all fits within the storyline and ends up being such a fun and interesting plot。Something that really struck me about this book was how much action goes on in this book without it being too bogged down or boring。 I will not give away any important information, but t I love ancient Egyptian mythology and when I saw what this book was about I was instantly interested in it and in seeing what happens in the story。 I absolutely loved the way that in this book there is so much happening but it still all fits within the storyline and ends up being such a fun and interesting plot。Something that really struck me about this book was how much action goes on in this book without it being too bogged down or boring。 I will not give away any important information, but the ending of this book is fantastic! It is not someone born that way。 A hero is a man who defeats his greatest enemy first—his own fear—then carries on。”Be watching for Wilbur Smith’s (collaboration with Mark Chadbourn) newest novel of the ancient Egyptian world, The New Kingdom, coming September 2021, from Simon & Schuster。 。。。more

Wilbur Smith in unparalleled in his gift of bringing history alive to a reader。 This new novel of Ancient Egypt has all the drama, dazzle and danger of his previous books and it kept me enthralled from the first chapter to the last。The characters are vibrant and relatable, despite the thousands of years that separate us。 Whether they are warriors or nobles, Smith finds the humanity in each of his characters and we are easily caught in the magic of his story- telling。
